Because text references gforce protections and whisperlite we know this is a seagate momentus drive.
While searching for a 7200 rpm drive I came across this user replacement drive. Initially I found the same drive in the 160 gig format for $108 and thought that was a good price. When I went to order it and was searching for it I came across this one. These drives are in essence oem seagates but carry the Dell branding. When I say branding I am not certain whether there is a seagate label on it or a Dell label. Warranty will be one year and yes that is a downside. However, a seagate drive with a 5 year warranty will set you back approximately double the price.
You may want to consider the hitachi external 7200 rpm drive at bestbuy for anywhere between $100-120 that you can crack open and use. The benefit of this drive is the coupons you can apply to bring the price down. For instance. As the price is a regular price you can stack the $25 off $25 welcome kit coupons you may have received in the last month. I participated in the mass feeding frency at the end of December early January and funny enough, one of my orders qualified me for an email coupon which I used on this order that I had not used. Check your own orders or if you must, there is always eBay although there are not many $25 off $25 listings.
As price is regular you can stack percentage off coupons - I used a 10% but do not know if 15% exist of Dell HOME. The price is the same at Dell BUSINESS but you cannot use the $25 off $25 as that is for HOME only. You may have other permutations. If you have gift cards you could use those towards the purchase price. Shipping is free over $129 so you may want to find a filler as you will pay $4.95 shipping. My unit cost $73 after adding filler I needed (free shipping) and $25 off and 10% stacking coupon.
If you search Dell Home and Business you will find what appears to be the same drive under difference Dell part numbers at different prices. I am guessing that they have higher pricing for instance for Latitude laptops because they are designed for the business segment and can charge more. My theory at least. For example, search 7200 rpm drives at Dell HOME and you will see 120, 160 and 200 gig 7200 rpm drives around the same price of $109 - odd.
I think it is a good deal. Any comments are welcome. Shipping is 2 weeks out or so. You will not be disappointed with the performance improvement in your system if you upgrade from a 5400 rpm drive. 100/120/200/250 5400 drives can be had for up to $150 or so but remember this is a 7200 rpm drive. There are currently some very reasonable 7200 rpm drive threads and clearance at best buy although 5400 rpm drives. This appears to be an opportunity to bring the price down with coupons to arrive at a reasonable $75-80 shipped.
I copied my own post from sd.
